Federal Award 2019

Too good for the trash!

Each person throws away around 55 kilograms of food per year . And that's just the waste produced in private households . The initiative "Too good for the trash!" by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture shows how food waste can be reduced . Stakeholders from industry, trade, catering, and agriculture, as well as consumer associations, churches, and NGOs support the initiative. At www.zugutfuerdietonne.de, you can find tips on food storage and shelf life, facts about food waste, and recipes for making the most of leftovers.

Commitment to fighting food waste is rewarded

On April 3, 2019, Federal Minister of Food Julia Klöckner presented the Too Good to Go! – Federal Award 2019 in Berlin.
A total of 18 projects were nominated in five categories (agriculture & production, trade, gastronomy, society & education, and – for the first time – Digitalization); other projects were honored with a sponsorship award. A total of €15,000 has been earmarked for this purpose.
A total of 117 applications were submitted this year. From these, the jury chaired by Bärbel Dieckmann, former president of Welthungerhilfe e.V., selected 18 projects as finalists. The winners were announced by Federal Minister Julia Klöckner at a festive award ceremony. CassiusGarten was one of them:

The 2019 award winners by category are:

Agriculture & Production:

ShoutOutLoud e.V. for "Frankfurter Knärzje – A bread beer against food waste" (Frankfurt, Hesse):

The ShoutOutLoud e. V. association, together with two breweries, produces the zero-waste beer "Frankfurter Knärzje" from old bread.

Gastronomy:

Cassius Garten for "Eat everything" (Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia):

The Cassius Garten restaurant produces hardly any food waste. Guests are charged for their food by weight. Shortly before closing time, guests line up to take home discounted leftovers.

Retail:

Penny Markt GmbH for "Saving precious resources" and "Naturgut Bio-Helden" (Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia):

PENNY markets fruit and vegetables with cosmetic flaws. In addition, the discounter promotes the idea that the best-before date should not be regarded as a throw-away date and has printed corresponding information on its dairy products.

Digitalization:

Too Good to Go GmbH (Berlin):

The Too Good To Go app allows consumers to buy surplus food from restaurants, bakeries, and supermarkets at a discount.

Society & Education:

Ackerdemia e. V. for "Farming creates education" (Potsdam, Brandenburg):

The Ackerdemia e. V. association raises children's awareness of where our food comes from and how it is grown. At the heart of the association is the year-round, multi-award-winning educational program GemüseAckerdemie (Vegetable Academy) for schools and daycare centers.
